Definition
- The analysis of the meaning of work was one of the earliest debates in the development of sociology as a social science and can be seen as a reaction to the emergence of capitalist industrialism, with its new social class of landless workers selling their labor under routinized work regimes. To understand industrial work was to understand the nature of industrialism, and this connection between the nature of work and its societal context is still evident today in analyses of contemporary society.
