- The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that there are currently over 2 million offenders incarcerated in jails and prisons and the use of jails and prisons for punishment in the United States has been increasing over the past several decades. Additionally, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that a majority of male and female state and federal prisoners were the parents of a child under the age of 18.
