Preferred term

gender and sexuality

  • Gender, the socially defined identity that cultures create for members of different biological sexes, and sexuality, an individual's self-expression as a sexual being, intersect with one another and with race to shape experience within historical and cultural contexts. For Asian Americans, the shaping of gendered and sexualized selves is further complicated by the conflict between their traditional cultures and normative American culture and by persistent, often contradictory, racial and gender stereotypes.
