Definition
- Most comic book historians agree that superheroes were born in 1938 when Action Comics #1 introduced the world to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Superman. Superman embodies many features of a classic superhero—an individual who uses her or his fantastic powers against malevolent antagonists. [Source: Encyclopedia of Gender and Society; Superheroes]
